rolling stones

Rocks in motion

Rolling stones is the plural of rolling stone—a person who moves frequently, never settling in one place or occupation.

The phrase comes from the proverb "a rolling stone gathers no moss," which can be read as either warning (rootlessness prevents accumulation) or praise (movement prevents stagnation).

He's been a rolling stone his whole life, never staying anywhere longer than a year. (Capitalized Rolling Stones is the British rock band.)
