rogue agent
Spy gone freelance
A rogue agent is someone who acts independently of or against the organization they belong to.
The term comes from espionage and law enforcement, where a rogue agent operates outside sanctioned orders: The CIA disavowed the rogue agent after the assassination.
It extends to anyone who breaks from institutional control to pursue their own agenda, often causing problems for their former allies.
