ring up

Dial a number

Ring up means to record a sale on a cash register, from the bell that older registers rang when opened: She rang up my groceries.

By extension, to ring up is to accumulate any total: The team rang up three consecutive victories.

In British English, ring up also means to telephone someone: I'll ring you up tomorrow.
