restoring force

Spring's return tendency

A restoring force is any force that pushes or pulls something back toward its original position after displacement.

When you stretch a spring, the restoring force pulls it back; when you push a pendulum aside, gravity provides the restoring force that swings it back toward center.

The concept is fundamental to understanding oscillation and vibration in physics: The restoring force increases proportionally with displacement.
