remilitarisation

Restoring armed forces

Remilitarisation is the process of rebuilding military forces or returning military presence to an area where it was previously removed or restricted.

The term often appears in historical contexts: the remilitarisation of the Rhineland in 1936.

A country might remilitarise after a period of disarmament, or a demilitarised zone might be remilitarised when treaties collapse.

Also spelled remilitarization.
