quick return
Fast trip back
Quick return describes a mechanism or motion where the return stroke moves faster than the working stroke.
Common in machine tools like shapers and planers, the quick return minimizes wasted time when the cutting tool isn't engaged with the workpiece.
The asymmetry comes from linkages or cams that produce different speeds in each direction: The shaper's quick return lets it cut on the forward stroke and snap back rapidly.
