quasi-contract

Court-imposed legal duty

A quasi-contract is a legal obligation imposed by courts to prevent unjust enrichment, even though no actual contract exists between the parties.

If someone receives a benefit they didn't pay for and keeping it would be unfair, courts may treat the situation as if a contract existed: The doctor who treated the unconscious accident victim recovered fees under quasi-contract.

Also called an implied-in-law contract.
