purline
Horizontal roof timber
A purline (also spelled purlin) is a horizontal beam in a roof structure, running parallel to the ridge and supporting the rafters or roof decking.
Purlines transfer the roof's weight to the main structural supports.
The old barn's purlines had rotted through and needed replacing.
