pure research
Science without applications
Pure research is inquiry driven by curiosity rather than practical application—the pursuit of knowledge for its own sake.
Also called basic research, it aims to expand understanding of fundamental principles without immediate concern for commercial or technological use: Pure research in physics led to discoveries that only later enabled practical technologies.
Contrast with applied research.
