public sculpture
Art in plazas
Public sculpture is three-dimensional artwork installed in shared spaces—parks, plazas, civic buildings, streetscapes.
Unlike museum pieces, public sculptures are encountered casually by passersby rather than sought out by visitors.
The term covers monuments, memorials, abstract installations, and decorative statuary: The city commissioned a public sculpture for the new waterfront.
Debates over public sculpture often center on whose stories get told in shared space.
