public-schools
Government-run educational institutions
Public schools are government-funded schools open to all children, free of charge.
In the United States, this is the standard meaning: My kids go to public school.
In Britain, however, public schools are elite private boarding schools like Eton and Harrow—"public" in the historical sense of being open to anyone who could pay, rather than restricted to a particular locality or religion.
This transatlantic reversal causes persistent confusion.
