primal scene
Childhood parental encounter
Primal scene is a psychoanalytic term for a child's real or imagined witnessing of parental sexual intercourse.
Freud theorized that such scenes, whether actually observed or fantasized, could profoundly shape psychological development and become a source of later neurosis.
The concept has extended beyond clinical use to describe any formative early experience that shapes someone's later understanding: That summer at the lake was the primal scene of my obsession with nature.
