pre-condition

Necessary first step

A pre-condition is something that must be true or in place before something else can happen.

In contracts and negotiations, pre-conditions are requirements that must be met before parties will proceed: The rebels set a ceasefire as a pre-condition for talks.

In computing and logic, a pre-condition is a state that must hold before a function executes correctly.
