praise break
Unplanned worship outburst
A praise break is a moment during a Black church service when the congregation erupts in spontaneous, exuberant worship—shouting, dancing, clapping, or catching the Holy Spirit.
The music intensifies, often with drums and organ driving the energy, and normal proceedings pause while people express religious ecstasy: The choir hit that note and the whole church went into a praise break.
The term has spread beyond church to describe any moment of uninhibited joyful release.
