pouring one out

Drink for absent

Pouring one out is a gesture of tribute to someone who has died, performed by spilling a portion of a drink—usually alcohol—onto the ground before drinking the rest.

The ritual has roots in ancient libation practices but survives mainly in hip-hop culture and informal memorial moments: Let me pour one out for the homies we lost.

Often used figuratively for humorous or ironic "tributes" to minor losses: Pouring one out for my dead phone.
