popular votes
Citizens' counted choices
Popular votes are the ballots cast by individual citizens in an election, as distinct from votes cast by delegates, electors, or other intermediaries.
In U.S. presidential elections, a candidate can win the popular vote—receive more individual votes nationwide—while losing the Electoral College and thus the presidency: She won the popular vote by three million but lost the election.
