poor Yorick

Jester long dead

Poor Yorick is an allusion to Shakespeare's *Hamlet*, where the prince holds the skull of a court jester he knew as a child and muses on mortality: "Alas, poor Yorick!

I knew him, Horatio." The phrase invokes melancholy reflection on death and the transience of life, often used with ironic detachment: Poor Yorick—he never did finish that novel.
