polar express

Northbound holiday locomotive

The Polar Express is a 1985 children's picture book by Chris Van Allsburg about a magical train that carries a boy to the North Pole on Christmas Eve.

A 2004 animated film adaptation made the story widely known.

The phrase sometimes appears generically for any fantastical Christmas journey or experience: The kids treated the holiday train ride like their own polar express.
