plutonium bomb
Fissile element device
A plutonium bomb is a nuclear weapon that uses plutonium-239 as its fissile material.
The first nuclear device ever detonated—the Trinity test in 1945—and the bomb dropped on Nagasaki were plutonium bombs.
They work by implosion, compressing a plutonium core to achieve critical mass.
Distinguished from uranium bombs, which use a simpler gun-type design.
