plug and pray
Connect, then hope
Plug and pray is a joking corruption of "plug and play," the computing standard that lets hardware work automatically when connected.
The phrase captures the frustration when such devices don't work as promised—you plug them in and pray they'll be recognized: I connected the new printer and it was plug and pray for twenty minutes before it finally showed up.
