plights
Serious trouble situations
Plights is the plural of plight, a difficult or dangerous situation: the plights of refugees, economic plights facing small farmers.
The word carries a tone of sympathy—we speak of someone's plight when we want to draw attention to their unfortunate circumstances.
Less commonly, to plight is to pledge solemnly, surviving mainly in the archaic phrase plight one's troth.
