player pianos

Automated musical instruments

A player piano is a piano that plays itself mechanically, using a pneumatic system to read perforated paper rolls that encode the music.

Popular in the early twentieth century before recorded music became widespread, player pianos could reproduce performances without a live musician: The saloon had a player piano in the corner.

The technology has nostalgic associations with that era.
