piggy in the middle

Stuck between two

Piggy in the middle is a children's game where two players toss a ball back and forth while a third player in the middle tries to intercept it.

The phrase extends to anyone caught between two opposing parties: I'm always piggy in the middle when my parents argue.

Also called monkey in the middle, especially in American English.
