piggy back

Ride on shoulders

Piggyback describes carrying someone on your back, with their legs around your waist and arms around your neck—the way children ride on adults.

The term extends to anything that rides along on something else: a piggyback loan adds to an existing mortgage, trucks piggyback on trains.

To piggyback on someone's work is to build upon or exploit it: The startup piggybacked on existing infrastructure.

Also spelled piggy-back or piggy back.
