pet microchips
Implanted identification tags
Pet microchips are tiny electronic chips implanted under an animal's skin, typically between the shoulder blades, for identification purposes.
Each chip contains a unique ID number that can be read with a scanner, linking the animal to its owner's contact information in a database.
Unlike collars and tags, microchips can't fall off or be removed: The shelter scanned the stray and found a microchip registered to a family across town.
