peremptory challenge
Unexplained juror rejection
A peremptory challenge is a legal right to reject a prospective juror during jury selection without giving any reason.
Each side in a trial receives a limited number of these challenges: The defense used its last peremptory challenge on juror number twelve.
Unlike challenges for cause, which require demonstrating bias, peremptory challenges need no justification—though courts have barred their use for racial or gender discrimination.
