alternate juror
Reserve jury member
An alternate juror is a backup juror selected to replace a regular juror if one becomes unable to continue serving during a trial.
Alternates sit through the entire trial but only deliberate if called upon: Two alternate jurors were dismissed after the jury began deliberations.
Courts typically select one to six alternates depending on the expected length and complexity of the case.
