peace wall

Conflict separation structure

A peace wall is a barrier built to separate communities in conflict, most associated with Northern Ireland, where walls were erected between Catholic and Protestant neighborhoods during the Troubles.

Despite the hopeful name, peace walls are physical acknowledgments of division rather than reconciliation: The peace wall still runs through the heart of Belfast.

Similar structures exist in other divided cities.
