pattycake

Children's clapping game

Pattycake is a children's clapping game played by two people facing each other, rhythmically clapping their own hands and then each other's while reciting a nursery rhyme.

The term also refers to the rhyme itself, which traditionally involves a baker patting cake.

By extension, pattycake can describe any interaction perceived as overly gentle, cooperative, or lacking real conflict: Congress is just playing pattycake with the lobbyists.

Also spelled patty-cake or pat-a-cake.
