parallel play
Side-by-side solitude
Parallel play is when young children play alongside each other without directly interacting—two toddlers building separate block towers at the same table, absorbed in their own activities but aware of each other's presence.
Developmental psychologists consider it a normal stage before cooperative play emerges.
The term extends to adults doing separate activities in shared space: We spent the evening in parallel play—she read while I played video games.
