papoose

Cradleboard or occupant

Papoose is a word borrowed from Algonquian languages that refers to a Native American infant or young child.

It also denotes the cradleboard or carrier traditionally used by some Indigenous peoples to carry babies on their backs.

The term has fallen out of favor in contemporary usage, as many consider it dated or offensive when used by non-Native speakers.

The museum displayed a traditional papoose carrier from the 19th century.
