overplanning

Too much preparation

Overplanning is the act of planning to an excessive or counterproductive degree, often at the expense of actually doing the thing being planned.

Someone who overplans a vacation might spend so much time researching restaurants and attractions that the trip itself feels rigid and joyless.

The term implies that planning, normally beneficial, has crossed a threshold where it creates more problems than it solves—whether through wasted time, inflexibility, or paralysis by analysis.

We overplanned the party and stressed ourselves out.
