overpenetration

Bullet exits target

Overpenetration occurs when a projectile passes completely through its target and continues beyond, potentially causing unintended damage.

The term appears most often in firearms and ballistics discussions, where a bullet that overpenetrates may strike bystanders or property behind the target: Hollow-point ammunition is designed to expand and reduce overpenetration.

The concept extends to other contexts where force exceeds what's needed for the task.
