overcontribution

Giving beyond limits

Overcontribution is putting more into something than is allowed or advisable.

The term appears most often in financial contexts—exceeding the annual limit on retirement account deposits triggers tax penalties: The IRS notified her of a $2,000 overcontribution to her IRA.

More broadly, it can mean giving disproportionately to a shared effort: His overcontribution to the project left colleagues feeling sidelined.
