outriders
Scouts flanking carriages
Outriders are mounted attendants who ride ahead of or alongside a vehicle, especially one carrying an important person.
The term evokes ceremonial processions or security details: The president's motorcade included police outriders.
More broadly, an outrider is someone who goes ahead to scout or prepare the way, or a forerunner of change: outriders of a new political movement.
