out-of-universe
Outside the story
Out-of-universe describes commentary or explanation that steps outside a fictional world to address real-world considerations—authorship, production, or narrative choices.
A fan might explain a character's absence by saying The actor was filming another movie, rather than inventing an in-story reason.
The term appears in discussions of fiction, especially among dedicated fans parsing the difference between what's "true" within a story and what's true about its creation.
