order parameter
Phase transition indicator
An order parameter is a quantity that measures the degree of order in a physical system, particularly during phase transitions.
It equals zero in the disordered phase and takes nonzero values in the ordered phase: magnetization serves as the order parameter for ferromagnets, density difference for liquid-gas transitions.
The concept originates in physics but extends to any system where a measurable quantity captures the emergence of collective organization.
