opening shift
Morning work stint
The opening shift is the first work period of the day, when employees arrive to prepare a business for operation—unlocking doors, turning on equipment, setting up displays, brewing coffee.
Often the least desirable shift because of its early hours: I'm on opening shift this week, so I have to be there by 5 a.m.
