open-source movement

Public software philosophy

The open-source movement advocates for software whose source code is freely available for anyone to view, modify, and distribute.

Beginning in the late 1990s as a philosophy distinct from proprietary software development, it emphasizes collaborative improvement and transparency: Linux emerged from the open-source movement.

The principles have spread beyond software to hardware, science, and creative works.
