oil strikes
Black gold finds
Oil strikes are discoveries of underground petroleum deposits, typically made during exploratory drilling.
The term evokes the dramatic moment when a well "strikes oil"—hitting a productive reservoir after uncertain prospecting.
Oil strikes can transform regions economically: The oil strikes in Texas created overnight millionaires.
Workers who participate in such discoveries are said to have struck oil.
