note reading

Interpreting written music

Note reading is the skill of interpreting written musical notation—recognizing symbols on a staff and understanding what pitches, rhythms, and dynamics they represent.

Musicians distinguish between sight-reading (playing unfamiliar music on first encounter) and the broader ability to read notation fluently: Her note reading improved after months of practice with flash cards.
