nogging

Between-stud masonry

Nogging is a construction term for the brickwork or rough masonry used to fill the spaces between wooden framing in a timber-framed wall.

The technique, also called brick nogging, was common in older buildings where the timber skeleton provided structure and the infill provided insulation and weather protection.

The word can also refer to the short horizontal timbers fitted between studs to stiffen a wall frame.
