near fall

Close to pinned

A near fall is a wrestling term for a situation where a wrestler has their opponent's shoulders close to the mat—typically at a 45-degree angle or less—for a sustained count, but fails to complete a pin.

Officials award points for near falls based on duration: He scored three points on a near fall in the second period.

Also called a near pin or, in some contexts, a back exposure.
