muted trumpet

Softened horn sound

A muted trumpet is a trumpet with a device inserted into or held over its bell to alter the sound—typically making it softer, more distant, or nasally depending on the mute type.

Different mutes produce distinct timbres: the cup mute creates a mellow tone, the harmon mute (with stem removed) produces the characteristic "wah-wah" sound of jazz, and the straight mute gives a more piercing, edgy quality.

The muted trumpet solo gave the piece an intimate, melancholy feel.
