modern plays
Current stage works
Modern plays are theatrical works from roughly the late 19th century onward, distinguished from classical drama by realistic dialogue, psychological complexity, and contemporary social themes.
The term encompasses everything from Ibsen and Chekhov through mid-century absurdism to present-day productions: We're reading modern plays in my theater class.
What counts as "modern" shifts with time—works from the 1950s now feel historical even if technically modern.
