modern China
Today's Middle Kingdom
Modern China refers to the People's Republic of China from 1949 onward, or more broadly to China since the fall of the Qing dynasty in 1912.
The term often emphasizes the country's transformation through communist revolution, economic reforms, and rapid industrialization: Modern China has become a global manufacturing hub.
In academic contexts, it may extend back to the Opium Wars of the 1840s, marking the beginning of China's engagement with Western powers.
