underdeveloped nations
Less industrialized states
Underdeveloped nations are countries with low economic output, limited industrialization, and poor infrastructure compared to wealthier states.
The term was common in mid-20th-century discourse but has largely given way to "developing nations" or "Global South," which avoid implying that Western-style development is the standard against which all countries should be measured.
