military judge
Armed forces magistrate
A military judge is an officer who presides over courts-martial and other military judicial proceedings.
Unlike civilian judges, military judges are active-duty service members with legal training, typically from the Judge Advocate General's Corps.
They rule on matters of law, instruct court members on legal standards, and in some cases determine sentencing: The military judge dismissed the charges for lack of evidence.
