military codes
Classified communication systems
Military codes are systems for encrypting or concealing the content of communications—distinct from ciphers, which transform individual letters or characters.
Codes substitute whole words or phrases: a codebook might assign "Neptune" to mean "invasion begins." The term extends loosely to any standardized military communication system: The radio operator transmitted in code.
NATO phonetic alphabet, signal flags, and numbered brevity codes all fall under military codes.
