midlist

Midlist describes books and authors that sell steadily but aren't bestsellers or prestige titles.

A midlist author has a loyal readership and gets published reliably, but without major marketing pushes or prominent placement: She's a solid midlist writer—never hits the bestseller charts but never goes out of print either.

Publishers increasingly squeeze the midlist, favoring blockbusters and debut sensations over reliable moderate sellers.
